What do our Governors do for St Luke's?

 

Each individual governor is a member of a governing board, which is established in law as a corporate body. Individual governors don't act independently of the rest of the governing board; decisions are the joint responsibility of the governing board. School governance is a team effort and decisions are made corporately.

 

Effective governance is about team work with headteachers, staff, governors and the community.

The role of the governing board is a strategic one, its key functions are to:

  • Set the aims and objectives for the school;
  • Set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives;
  • Set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives;
  • Monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives;
  • Be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher (a critical friend).

 

In the real world this means your governors are responsible for:-

  • Setting and managing the overall budget for the school;
  • Deciding on the number of staff;
  • Interviewing and appointing teaching and support staff;
  • Deciding on the level of pay for staff;
  • Helping to decide the priorities for improving the school when the school development plan is being drawn up;
  • Ensuring the National Curriculum is taught to all pupils;
  • Setting targets for pupil achievement;
  • Comparing the performance of their school to similar schools;
  • Receiving information about the quality of teaching in the school;
  • Have a published procedure for dealing with parental complaints and concerns;
  • Ensuring the balanced treatment of political issues;
  • Ensuring health and safety issues are addressed;
  • Setting the times of school sessions. 

 

Your governors will be involved in actively participating in the school by:

  • Attending governing body meetings (at least three a year);
  • Contributing to discussions;
  • Taking part in agreed actions after meetings;
  • Reading relevant papers;
  • Increasing your ability to contribute to the work of the governing body by taking part in training and other opportunities to develop knowledge, skills and understanding;
  • Seeking at all times to promote the best interests of the school and the education of its pupils;

 

The School Governors hold an important public office and their identity should be known to their school and wider communities.

The school will try and keep the information about your governors as up-to-date as possible – there is some information we have to give you. This includes:

• The structure and remit of the governing body and any committees and chair;

• Each governor (or associated members) who has served at any point from this point forward:

• Their full names,

• Date of appointment,

• Term of office, date they stepped down (where applicable),

• Who appointed them (in accordance with the governing body’s instrument of government),

• Relevant business and pecuniary interests (as recorded in the register of interests) including:

  • Governance roles in other educational institutions;
  • Any material interests arising from relationships between governors or relationships between governors and school staff (including spouses, partners and close relatives);
  • Their attendance record at governing body and committee meetings over the last academic year (committee voting rights for associate members will also be detailed).
